Herbal Formula Brands for Detox

Herbal Formula Brands for Detox

I have spent thousands of dollars on herbs and I am sure that they have been instrumental in my healing journey. My herbal protocol designed at the Dr. Morse Herbal Health Clinic had me on a list of several different blends to specifically target certain body parts pertaining to my specific ailments. With each tincture ringing in around $25 each (plus hefty shipping costs) all in USD, being on several different tinctures at once and having a single bottle last 2 weeks, it’s safe to say that this route is not a cheap one! That being said, the Dr. Morse’ formulas are powerful, entirely organic and/or wildcrafted, designed by Dr. Morse (an epic naturopath/herbalist/healer) and surely produced results. I have no regrets in taking them but I understand it is not something everyone can afford and I want to present some ways to work around this.

Different Options

The first is ordering from alternative websites as the Dr. Morse Herbal Health Clinic (DMHHC) charges a lot if you’re not American. I often ordered my herbs from Our Botanicals as they used to carry a ton of the Dr. Morse formulas, but not so much anymore (or as of right now, anyway). They do have their own brand of formulas, like the “Brain & Nerve” tincture, that mimics the Dr. Morse version and is of good quality. They also have an excellent version of Heal All Tea called “Our Healing Tea” that consists of the same herbs and taste.

Another option is to buy herbs through a Detox Specialist like myself as we get 12% off of formulas as a distributor benefit. When working with a Detox Specialist, you will also get a consult and herbal protocol designed specifically for you. My detox services will be up and running at some point this year (sign up here for my e-mail list to be notified about new blog posts & my upcoming Detox Coaching services).

My most recent discovery is to buy my herbs from Master Fast System, as they have created their own line of herbal tinctures modelled after the Dr. Morse formulas at a much cheaper cost. Master Fast is a different type of detox protocol with a similar approach to healing as my dude Robert Morse. I have not tried the MFS protocol as it didn’t totally resonate with me, but I have seen many positive testimonials throughout the years of health seeking. Anyway, you can purchase their herbs in bigger bottles and it is a lot cheaper to ship (at least for me as they too are Canadian).

Lets compare the prices…

*While there are affiliate links in this post, I would never affiliate with something I didn’t fully believe in, trust, and use myself! That being said, if you do order from the Master Fast System, if you could please do so through the links in this post so that I may make a small commission, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

MasterFast System

I have used the Master Fast System herbs during a detox and can report back: they give me all the feels. Meaning tingling, sensations, healing crisis’, and a whole lot of elimination. I highly recommend!

Here is an excerpt from their website,

“These are made with 2:1 ratio using organic sugar cane alcohol and the highest quality herbs of organic or wild crafted source. Our special infusion process took many years of trial and error to develop. We haven’t found anything come close to the potency of MFS tinctures, and thus are the only ones we recommend on this lifestyle. MFS offers over 60 herbal tincture formulas to choose from, each containing 6-20 different herbs.”

-Master Fast System

I can attest that these Master Fast System herbs are fantastic, as are the entire line of Dr. Morse branded herbs. I used Dr. Morse’s herbs throughout my healing from wheelchair to walking, and as much as I love and want to support Dr. Morse, I wouldn’t be real with you if I were to say I was still taking them. I have switched to the MFS herbal line because it is much more cost efficient for me in Canada. I feel like Robert Morse wouldn’t mind me spreading the word as long as people are healing themselves. If money weren’t no thang, I’d buy Dr. Morses herbs to support the man who taught it all to me, but until that happens I’ll be sticking with the MFS!

The cheapest tinctures are the ones you brew yourself 💯

The next greatest work-around is making your own tinctures. I’m not a herbalist (yet), so I won’t pretend I know what I’m doing when it comes to combining different herbs and knowing which ratios to use.  What I am doing now is using the Dr. Morse website as a resource on which herbs to combine as the ingredients of all herbal formulas are listed on his tinctures.

So I make note on the different formulas, order the individual herbs from a reliable source (I order from Zhi Herbals, they are a Canadian company and have free shipping, no minimum!), and create my own herbal tinctures in jars. This process takes over a month though, so you might want something more readily available to support your eliminatory channels right now while you wait for those to brew.

While the upfront cost may at first seem high, the quantity that you can make outshines that cost real quick!

Herbies Herbs

Another great find of mine is through Herbies Herbs, an herb shop in Toronto that allows you to create your own formulas to be shipped out to you. Again, I snagged the ingredient list from the Dr. Morse formulas and used them to create my own. With these tinctures, they simply combine the selected ingredients from their existing stash of tinctured herbs, so there is no brewing/waiting time.

Dr. Morse formulas often have a combination of over 10 different herbs per tincture, so I would advise getting the 100mL or 250mL bottles as they allow 10 to 14 herbs. For the 100mL, each additional herb after the 7th one is an extra $3. All pricing is in CAD, which is something serious to consider when comparing to herbs priced in USD. Shipping costs $16 for 4x 250mL custom tinctures, but keep in mind that this is pretty local to me as I’m about 1.5h out of Toronto.

Other Formulas

One brand I am fond of is called “Christophers Original Formulas”. They have multi-herb formulas targeting specific body systems and areas, as well as singular herbal tinctures. A reliable online herb store that has gained several of my dollars is iHerb, and they offer a wide selection of this brand. Another brand I like is called Natures way, I like to buy their single herb capsules, also available at iHerb.

If ordering a whole whack of herbs is beyond your budget, there are some singular herbal tinctures/capsules you can get from your local health food store, Amazon , iHerb, or where ever.

Here are some of my favourite single herbs:

The CHEAPEST way to incorporate more healing herbs into your daily practice…

Herbal Infusions & Teas!

The most convenient, cost efficient, and delicious way to add herbs into your life is through herbal teas and infusions. An herbal infusion is just a tea that has been steeped longer and reaps more of the herbal constituents. I wrote a blog post detailing how to prepare herbal infusions, ratios to use, and my favourite tea blends you can check out here. My favourite place to get organic/wildcrafted tea blends & loose herbs are from Zhi Herbals (free shipping/no minimum to Canada).

In Conclusion…

I healed my body from wheelchair to walking using Dr. Morse’s teachings and herbal line; I truly owe so much of who I’ve become to this wonderful man. However, like many others on this healing path, money is a major factor and so I’ve switched to the MasterFast System herbal line as they are more affordable to me in Canada. Both lines are incredible, I just wanted to present some other herbal options when it comes to regenerative detoxification.

Happy Healing my loves✌🏻

Herbal Protocol

When my disease hit me and I decided to heal through the natural route of regenerative detoxification, I had a consult with the Dr. Morse Herbal Health Clinic and worked with a Detox Specialist named Atilla. After discussing my symptoms and having my iris read (through a science called iridology), Atilla prescribed me a 14-week herbal protocol consisting of about 9 tinctures and 4 different capsules that I was to take 3x a day alongside my detox diet. With each formula costing $25 USD (plus hefty shipping costs) and lasting 2 weeks, it is safe to say this road wasn’t a cheap one.

Right before I got sick/crippled, I had this wicked month-long Euro trip planned (and partly booked) that I never got to go on. I had saved up a bunch of money with plans to quit my job and fly away with only my backpack. As bummed as I was that I never got to go on this epic trip, it turned out to be a real blessing;

The Euro trip that never happened funded my herbal healing protocol🤑

Because these tinctures cost me thousands of dollars in the long run (no regrets—they definitely played a major role in my healing), I had it in my head that I would only use them when I was in deep detox modes aka. a fruit only diet. A year into my fruit-fast with extensive herbal use (click here for that whole story), I had healed tremendously, was out of my wheelchair and back on my feet. At this point I started adding vegetables back into my diet, and I stopped taking herbs because a) they were expensive and b) I wasn’t detoxing as hard as usual so I wanted to save them for a time that I was. Because of how expensive the herbs were (and with my list of health problems, how could I only choose a couple when I was used to taking 9+ formulas, 3x a day?), I saved my herbal stash for when I was detoxing the hardest and they would be needed the most.

This “all or nothing” attitude was a corrupt little box that I built around me;

herbs are beneficial to anyone, at anytime.

I stopped taking them all together because it was hard for me to narrow down which herbs to take because I still had so many issues. That, and they’re expensive! When taking tinctures, it is best to do it on an empty/empty-ish stomach, away from food, for better absorption and utilization. This can make scheduling herbs and eating times a little tricky as one has to eat frequently on a raw food diet. I somehow felt that if I were going to go through the trouble of taking herbs 3x a day, it was better that I took a whole slew of them to make it really worth my while.

Again, my all-or-nothing mindset…I’m working on it.

Herbal Teas

What I never stopped doing however was drinking herbal tea’s. They are an affordable, convenient, and delicious way to incorporate herbs into your daily life. I always have a stash of different tea’s for different uses, and I often feel immediate stimulation.

Note: I did not always feel stimulation from tea but i feel it more when I am detoxing or eating a raw food diet, particularly when I start my day with tea on an empty stomach. When the body becomes cleaner, you will start to notice the effects of herbs more clearly. Four years into this cleansing lifestyle, one being in an extreme detox, I very noticably feel the effects of tea, and have for some time. But know this, and this part is KEY; even if you don’t feel anything, it is still working. When I first started detoxing I didn’t feel much from herbs but I know they definitely played a big role in my healing.

Herbal Infusions

As a frequent herbal tea drinker, I was delighted to come across some helpful information about herbal infusions. They are basically the same thing as a tea, albeit the infusion is steeped much longer than a tea and reaps many more benefits. Apart from the added benefits, infusions tickle my fancy more-so in the summer months as I drink them cold with stir of agave (a vegan sweetener made from the agave plant). I mean, why drink plain water when I could be drinking refreshing herb-infused water?

From the book, “Dr. Sebi Medicinal Herbs” by Kerri M Williams, she notes, “Herbs that have very powerful sedative or stimulating properties, such as St. Johns Wort, are better served as tea than an infusion”. She then describes the difference in quality between a tea and an infusion as follows:

“…if you steep 2 teaspoons of nettle tea in hot water for ten minutes, you get about 5-10 mg of calcium. But, if you steep 2 spoonfuls of nettle tea in a liter of hot water for at least 4 hours, you get over 200 mg of calcium per cup (plus all the other nutrients the nettle leaves contain).”

That means an infusion is 20x more potent with herbal benefits then just a tea….move over tea! Herbal infusions are where its at!!

Infusion Tips

I personally don’t use a strainer as I have these handy large tea balls that I got off of Amazon. I’d post a link but it’s now saying $35 and I paid like half of that. Make sure you don’t get one that is meant for a mug because it won’t hold the amount of herbs needed for a quart (but the small ones are great for teas). The dimensions of my infusion tea balls are 15.8 x 8.1 x 7.9 cm (L x W x H) and are a perfect size.

For my infusions, I let them steep overnight in a large jar and place it in the fridge first thing in the morning so that they’re cold in a few hours. Consuming it cold is a must for me, otherwise I find it hard to get through. I keep a designated stainless steal travel mug purely for infusions (it keeps it cold all day) that I use to sip on instead of water. I often do nettle leaf or horsetail, both are excellent for the kidneys and liver. Sometimes I add a bag of hibiscus or other flowery teas/herbs to make it taste better. Sweetening your infusion is a must in my opinion! Agave is my favourite natural vegan sweetener.

Favourite Healing Herbal Blends

LUNG TEA

Through the beginning months of my grand detox, my lungs purged so much and I had difficulty breathing since giving up the use of steroid inhalers. My greatest relief was through Dr. Morse’s 3 Lung Tea, which is just pleurisy root, mullein leaf, and fenugreek seed. I would brew it as a tea and it would instantly opened my airways. You can buy it from Dr. Morse’s Herbal Health Clinic but it’ll be cheaper if you buy the herbs separately and mix it yourself. I order from Zhi Herbals.

LIVER TEA

When I drink my Liver Tea, a combination I picked up from an herbal store (consisting of: Bortutu Root Bark, Bepleurum Root, Burdock Root, Dandelion Root, Gentian Root, Ginger Root, Ligistrum Seed, Marshmallow Root, Milk Thistle, Schisandra Berries, and Yellow Dock Root), I can feel a bubbling sensation in my liver. I welcome this sensation as it means things are moving!

HEAL ALL TEA

When I drink Dr. Morse’s Heal All Tea, (a blend I now mix myself: White oak bark‚ plantain leaf‚ black walnut hull‚ chaparral herb‚ burdock root‚ marshmallow root‚ comfrey root‚ comfrey leaf), I often feel a flush in my face or a tingle in my cerebellum. Full of powerful lymph moving herbs, these sensations are the result of my lymphatic system being stimulated. I am very familiar with this feeling as certain fruits do it to me too (watermelon), as well as ingesting other herbs. I also use this blend to douche with and to do enemas with. This is a tea blend Dr. Morse created and sells that I started to mix myself. Alternatively, Our Botanicals makes their own version of the same ingredients, with a slightly cheaper price.

FEMALE BALANCE

I’ve been making herbal infusions with a female hormone balancing blend (from Zhi Herbals), consisting of blessed thistle, chaste berries, ginger root, goldenseal leaf, motherwort, raspberry leaf, skullcap, spearmint, partridge berry herb, and uva-ursi, and consuming it daily for two weeks leading up to my period. I’ve also been douching with an infusion of Heal All Tea (ingredients listed above) for a week prior to my period. The combination of the two definitely made a difference in the severity of my period pain and I will be continuing this practice.

STOMACH TEA

Zhi Herbals also makes a stomach tea I am in love with! Made with calendula, chamomile, ginger, marshmallow root, meadowsweet, and wood betony, this tea instantly calms my stomach and I make sure I never run out. If I could only choose one tea for the rest of my life, it would be this one!

MY THIRD EYE OPENING BLEND

I very much believe the pineal gland is the doorway into the spiritual world and tapping into the innate psychic abilities that all humans have access to. I have researched herbs to aid in clearing the third eye chakra (or the pineal gland), that I will be sharing in a separate blog post. A powerful blend for the nervous and endocrine systems, as well as optimal brain function, this blend turned out to be absolutely delicious and probably the best tasting tea that I drink! Sign up for my e-mail listing here to be notified when that comes out!

Single Herbs

You don’t have to only consume blended herbal teas as there are many reputable brands that produce quality single loose herbs that will greatly benefit you too. You should always look for wildcrafted or organic herbs, as the use of herbal medicine is becoming more popular, herbs can also be mass produced and full of pesticides.

A few favourites of mine are:

  • Chanca Piedra, a kidney stone breaker that definitely had an impact on my kidneys opening up to filtration.
  • Licorice Root, food for your adrenals!
  • Lemon Balm, to instantly feel a calmness in the nervous system
  • Passion Flower & Valerian for sleep aid (I have capsules of these as well as “night time tea” bags)
  • Burdock Root, for healing the skin
  • Mullein, for healing the lungs
  • Nettle Leaf, for strengthening the kidneys
  • Horsetail, also for the kidneys

Natures Pharmacy

We must remember that modern medicine has only been around for 200-some-odd years and before there were pharmaceuticals, there were herbs. And the beautiful thing about herbs is that they are god given medicine, often grown and accessed for free (meanwhile the pharmaceutical industry is making billions off of sick people. How sick). It is commonly noted that the most beneficial herbs to you are the ones growing in your backyard or specific to your country/area. If picking wild herbs (dandelion is ABUNDANT here in Canada), make sure it is from a wild place and not your fertilized and chemically sprayed lawn or the side of the road. When buying herbs, always buy organic and/or wildcrafted as they can also be mass produced and can contain pesticides/sprays and that can be detrimental to your health.

My go to for ordering bulk organic/wildcrafted herbs and tea blends is through Zhi Herbals, a family based business out of Vancouver. The best part is there is free shipping with no minimum required!!!

The Key to Detox: Cellular Environment

The Key to Detox: Cellular Environment

“The mind is an interpretation of the world, it causes the brain to release chemistry that matches that interpretation to coordinate 50 trillion cells to live in that world. It’s your emotions, perceptions, beliefs—these are the sources of the chemicals that end up controlling the genes” -Dr. Bruce Lipton

If you’ve heard of Bruce Lipton, you’ve heard of this experiment…

One stem cell in a petri dish divides every 10hrs, resulting in many genetically identical cells. 3 genetically identical cells are placed into 3 separate petri dishes, each with different culture mediums, ie. different environments.

The result of the experiment is that even though the genes were exactly the same genetically and possessed exactly the same DNA, each petri dish produced a different type of cell because it is the environment that affects the growth of the cell, not the genes themselves.

So why does this matter? The physical body is not one entity—it is a community made up of trillions of cells. The blood is our culture medium, but who controls the blood? The brain! The brain is the chemist as it sends signals to the organs and glands that release chemicals and hormones to suit the situation. But who controls the brain? How does it know what chemicals and hormones to release to adjust to the situation?

The mind.

When you see someone you love, your mind perceives this and the brain sends word to the glands releasing a cocktail of lovely chemicals & hormones, such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins, etc.  When you are in a state of stress or fear, this perception is sent to the brain which in turn releases stress hormones, inflammatory agents, immune suppressors, and the likes to prep you for fight or flight. Think of it in a primal sense; the state of fight or flight is just how it sounds—your body is preparing to either run from a predator or fight a predator. In this situation, your cells prioritize where your energy is needed most and puts other processes, such as digestion, cellular regeneration, hormone production, etc. on hold until it is safe to do so. The thing is, fight or flight isn’t only registered when you’re facing a predator in this day and age. It’s your anxiety, your hatred for your boss, or the deep dread you feel when your mother-in-law is staying for the weekend. When you are in a state of stress your brain passes this message along to your organs and glands to prepare for the situation. It is your emotions that trigger the response of your body to stop doing what it’s supposed to be doing. Or on the flip side, positive feelings can incite positive reactions from our body too.

Perception and the way you handle situations plays a key role in the functioning of your organs and glands.

Cells in a petri dish of the chemicals & hormones of love multiply, grow, and thrive. Cells in a petri dish of the chemicals & hormones of fear stop growing all together.

Now when you combine Bruce Lipton’s gene/cell theory and combine it with Dr. Morse’s lymphatic theory, an undeniable parallel is formed. We know that the blood isn’t the only culture medium for our cells as they bathe in an interstitial liquid we know to be lymphatic fluid. When this interstitial lymphatic fluid (which means to surround, ie. the cells environment) is clogged in acidic waste and toxicity, cellular respiration takes a halt and cells then become damaged, resulting in symptoms of disease.

Taking care of the cellular environment is the key to cellular respiration and regaining your health. Through a happy mind we emanate positive chemicals and hormones throughout the venous system, while keeping the glands that produce them active and functional. Through a high fruit/raw food diet rich in alkalinity, astringency, and nutrient density, we not only feed our cells but we cleanse the interstitial lymphatic fluid at the same time, eliminating waste from the cellular environment. Together, we clean the environment of the cell so it can multiply and thrive, just like the cells in the petri dish.

Disease isn’t only caused by the foods you eat just as it isn’t only caused by the thoughts you keep; it’s a combination of both. Mind and body go hand in hand with health as homeostasis is the peaceful coordination of many variables.

A happy environment for happy cells 😊

“Detoxification naturally begins as you alkalize yourself through a raw food diet. This process strengthens cells by removing the obstructions and acids that cause inflammation and block nutrients to your cells. Detoxification allows cells to gain nutritional energy and to properly eliminate their wastes via cellular respiration”

-Dr. Robert Morse

How to do an Enema

How to do an Enema

It’s not as scary as you think it is.

I promise.

Today I want to talk about the ever feared and dreaded enema. I once posted this picture of myself with my enema bag on an Instagram story and I got a lot of fearful response from it. People are scared of it.

I get it, I wasn’t stoked on putting a tube up my ass the first time either.

Oh the things we do for health! It’s really not that big of a deal and it leaves you feeling pretty good afterwards. Especially when detoxing, enemas can be extremely beneficial. Enemas are a quick and easy process that I’m gonna walk you through!

Why Enema?

An enema is of great assistance when detoxing as it can help unblock the colon and aid in the elimination process. It can help alleviate pressure that can affect you in other ways, such as headaches, skin issues, stomach trouble, and energy levels. The accumulation of stagnant waste in the body is the core cause of any disease and to avoid this, the health and functionality of your eliminatory channels are vital. Many of the foods people eat today are not colon friendly as they are drying and acidic, meaning they move slow and hang around in the body for longer than desired. The greatest way to avoid this is by eating a diet comprised of mostly fruits and veggies as they are hydrating, alkalizing, and full of fibre for easily processing and elimination. When you use an herbal tea in an enema, those healing herbs enter the walls of the colon to clean and strengthen the tissues. By removing stagnant waste, enemas are a great health tool for all.

How Often Should We Enema?

How often one should enema depends on the situation, but overall you don’t want to do this everyday or too often because you can become dependant on them. Primarily, you want to fix constipation issues with diet as the health of your colon highly depends on what you put into it. Along with proper diet, you can add in a good intestinal rejuvenator containing clays and herbs to rehabilitate the health of your GI tract.

  • If one is detoxing on a diet of raw fruit, veggies, and herbs, use enemas as needed. Eventually diet and herbs will settle this naturally.
  •  If one is doing a juice fast and not eliminating daily (totally the case for me!), enemas are crucial as you are not getting the fibre you would normally get from eating the fruits, veg, herbs. The fibre in food is what pushes waste out, and if nothing is coming out (less than usual is expected), you should probably help yourself out with an enema. However, many people still do eliminate during a juice fast in which they won’t need frequent enemas, so it really depends on each individual. During one of my juice fasts I woke up feeling the detox effects pretty hard; brain fog, head pressure, headache, lethargic. I did an enema and felt the pressure immediately let up. If you’re going to do a juice fast and you’re not poopin, you need to be doing enemas to help eliminate the old waste you’re loosening up with the juices.

What To Use?

It is best you use an herbal tea mix or regular spring water, but there is much debate over the popular coffee enema. The notion of the coffee enema is to stimulate the liver and bowels and the science behind it is quite fascinating, but Dr. Morse advises against it and I’d have to agree. He states that coffee enemas are far too stimulating to the bowel tissues and that overtime it can have an inflammatory response as it is acidic. He only advises it if one’s colon is “locked” and cannot make a bowel movement.

 Some  Advice…

Its really like chugging a beer through a funnel or beer bong; if you relax, it’ll flow right into you with ease. If you tense up, you’ll likely choke. Enemas are the beer bongs for your ass, however a much healthier version with a very different goal. Take a deep breath and relax your body before insertion and continually practice deep breathing throughout the process.

How to do an Enema

Step 1: Brew 1L of water with 2 tablespoons of herbal tea and allow to cool to room temperature. I like to use Dr. Morse’s Heal All Tea in a very large jar. Strain tea after it is cooled. He also recommends herbs such as Cascara Sagrada, Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm Bark, Plantain Leaf, Comfrey Root, Burdock Root and Gentian.

Step 2: Bring the following items into your bathroom

  • towel (to lie on)
  • enema bag (cleaned)
  • coconut oil or other natural lubricant
  • mirror
  • music
  • cooled tea

Step 3: You will need to hang the enema bag up high on the shower bar or door so gravity can do its thing. If it’s not high enough it wont fully work, you need it so that the hose is fully stretched out to reach you laying on the floor. Lay your towel down where you plan on hanging your bag.

Step 4: Make sure the valve is shut! Pour tea into the top of the bag and hang.

I got this for under $30 on Amazon. Having a bag with a valve makes the world of difference!

Step 5: To avoid an air block into your ass, point the tip of the hose back into the empty tea jar and release the valve so the hose fills fully. Allow a little tea to flow into the jar and close the valve again. Add that tea back into the top of the bag.

Step 6: Throw on some tunes if you haven’t already. Shits about to get real 💩

Step 7: Take pants off and use a little coconut oil to lube up your butt hole as well as the hose tip.

Step 8: Set up your mirror so that you can sit on your towel, lay to your left side and view your asshole in the mirror.  Get the hose tip ready.

Step 9: Use your sphincter muscles to push out (obviously not too hard💩 ). You will see in the mirror that your butt hole opens when you do this. THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT! While your butthole is openly smiling at the mirror, carefully slide the tube tip inside about 3 or 4 inches.

Step 10: Take a deep breathe and relax. While on your left side, hold the hose in place and open the valve. You will feel an immediate rush into you, allow this and try not to clench.

Step 11: Take as much as you can and then roll to your right side. Hold the hose tip in place while you do this. This will help move the tea around the bend of your colon and further into the large intestine. How much liquid you can take may vary for different individuals but I take the whole litre of tea. Close valve if you couldn’t take it all and remove the hose.

Step 12: It is best to hold the enema in when possible so the herbs can permeate the colon walls. It is good to massage the belly and switch sides laying down. Deep breathing into the diaphragm also helps move things around. Hold for at least five minutes or until you feel you need to release.

Step 13: Time to release. Head to the toilet and do your thing. You’ll be there for a little while and when you think it’s over, you’ll probably be back. Take it from me as I learned this the hard way, don’t go driving anywhere immediately after. Wait 15 min at least just in case you gotta go again.

And that’s it! You are now a butt-chugging champion with a much cleaner large intestine. Clean your bag with something non toxic and rinse very well. If you want to level up your colon cleanliness, you can attend some colonic sessions where you are flushed more thoroughly and deeper into the colon.

Assist Your Detox with a Portable Steam Sauna

The Most Important Detox Investment:

The Portable Steam Sauna

I cannot give enough praise for the way my portable steam sauna has helped me during my detox experience. If you have acne or skin issues, or are just detoxing in general, you NEED to be doing this! I made my steam sauna a part of my daily routine and my acne healed much faster because of it. Even if you don’t have skin issues, getting your sweat on is beneficial for everyone. Detox is all about elimination, and your skin acts as your “third kidney” as it’s one of the main outlets for lymphatic waste. We’re supposed to shed 2lbs of waste/skin a day and many of us don’t—the steam sauna is definitely the solution to this!

I log a serious amount of time in the sauna and in doing the math, I average out over 500 hours in the sauna a year! It’s safe to say that when it comes to sweatin’ out the sin, I’ve got you covered. I’m gonna share with you the tips and tricks in using a steam sauna to amp up your detox experience and discuss why it’s so beneficial for the healing process. I’m gonna walk you through my whole routine and touch on what you can do to improved your sauna experience by adding in tools, customizing your sauna, and making it a fun and enjoyable part of your day.

Why Sauna?

  • The skin is the largest eliminative organ and when you sweat you are eliminating toxins and bodily waste. This helps lessen the load/pressure on the kidneys, another key eliminative organ.
  • The process of sweating stimulates the lymphatic system, the cleaner of the body.
  • Hot temperatures dilate blood vessels, resulting in increased blood circulation throughout.
  • While sweating through exercising increases heart rate, the blood flow to organs is lowered because it’s needed in the limbs for movement. Sauna induced sweating encourages blood flow to vital organs aiding in the detoxification of said organs.
  • Improved sleep
  • GREAT for acne/skin problems as it helps remove debris off the skin for better breathability and helps speed up the healing process.

STEAM SAUNA & ACNE

While getting your sweat on is an extremely important aspect of detox for anyone, the reason I am so adamant about getting in everyday is because of the profound effect it’s had on my face and all it’s acne.

I think everyone knows you’re better off not poking and prodding your zits, but I also know that nobody wants to walk around with whiteheads looking like they’re ready to burst either. We’ve all tried to pop a zit that wasn’t ready to pop and ended up angering it further. Only pop a zit when it is “headed”, meaning there is a white head and it’s close to bursting on its own. Prodding a zit that isn’t ready to be popped leads to bleeding and leaving a darker, longer lasting hyperpigmentation mark. There is a fine line between ready to pop zits and ones that need more time, and that’s where the steam sauna is a tremendous help. It speeds up the whole healing process and helps bring zits to that poppable stage faster. This occurs because the hot steam opens our pores and make us sweat, pushing out toxins from our lymphatic system. The pus inside a zit is lymphatic fluid, and since sweating stimulates the lymphatic system, it brings zits to “head” faster. This makes a huge difference in the time it takes for my acne to come and go and saves me from deepening scars.

While acne is certainly an internal problem, a build up of external dead skin cells can clog pores and cause more acne that way. Exfoliating your skin plays a crucial role in skin health as it helps shed the old dead skin cells to make room for the new. The steam sauna softens the skin and makes it so the exfoliating process is gentle, and it is key to be as gentle as you can around acne. An essential part of my sauna routine is softly using exfoliating gloves around the acne in a mirror (being careful not to go over existing acne as it will irritate it further). Implementing this step has made my face feel much smoother and lessened the amount of acne I get. For a while, I could only do the outside of my face as I had too much acne and I had to opt for a gentler option—baking soda. While in the shower after the sauna, I would put about a tablespoon of baking soda in my hand and add a couple drops of water to make a paste. I’d then use my fingertips to gently caress my face, again being careful to avoid any painful cystic acne. This made a huge difference in the amount of small zits I was getting and left my face feeling softer and smoother.

So there you have it. Acne is the result of a clogged lymphatic system, particularly in the head area. Sweating helps stimulate the lymph fluid (which happens to be the fluid within a zit), bringing it to head faster and thus ending the zits life sooner. It softens the skin for easier exfoliation, preventing clogged pores and resulting in smoother, healthier skin. There was a big difference in my skin when I started hitting the sauna daily, and there is a noticeable difference if I stop.

FACE STEAMER

Now that I’ve healed a great deal and detox is no longer the focal point of my life, I sauna a lot less. As someone still struggling with acne, I purchased this glorious face steamer off of Amazon for around $40 so that I could still soften and prep my face for exfoliation. While a steamer misses the benefits of full body sweating, it allows me to open my pores, soften the skin for easier exfoliation, and help bring zits to head faster, all in ten minutes.

My routine for this to fill the unit with spring water, add a drop of lavender essential oil (every other use), and steam my face for about 7 minutes. I then head to my 5x zoom mirror and gently pop what’s been brought to head. With exfoliating gloves, I gently go over my face being careful not to go over any active and inflamed acne. I then go back to the steamer for another 7 minutes so that when I follow with my oil cleansing routine, my pores are open and ready.

LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!

When I first started my detox I got excited and bought a portable infrared sauna tent from Costco. This thing had me sweating ferociously and I was really pleased with it until I read about Dr. Morse being very against them. They pronounce these machines to be completely safe, with low EMF (electro-magnetic field) options deemed a “safe amount of radiation”, but it is exactly that. There isn’t any level of radiation that is safe. We know microwaves, another “safe” level of radiation, kills the nutrients in the food it heats. Infrared sauna’s are like microwaves for people, heating you from the inside out. While you do get a serious sweat on and are indeed eliminating toxins that way, you are still subjected to low-level radiation, which is acidic and therefore goes against everything I’ve re-learned. I searched the topic on rawfigs.com (a terrific resource guide that breaks down topics covered in Dr. Morse YouTube videos for easy searchable references), and the good doc goes on to tell us a story of how a woman’s breast tumor grew substantially from the use of infrared saunas. All I needed to hear was “radiation” and “acid” and I was very grateful for the Costco Return policy. This is how I came to land on the portable steam sauna.

WHAT TYPE OF SAUNA SHOULD YOU GET?

A sauna can be enjoyed by anyone and is used by all for more than just detox, so investing in a permanent one might be the right move for you. In that case, traditional Finnish wood burning saunas are said to be the best. There are also permanent electric, smoke, and steam saunas available for all you big spenders out there. But if you’re like me, with limited budget and space, you’re going to want to opt for a portable steam sauna tent!

So I took it to Amazon, and one week and $150 later, I was opening my new portable steam sauna. It looks ridiculous; not only is there a hole for your head to stick out of, there are also hand holes so you can play on your phone while your body sweats. Essentially it is a very tiny tent connected to a rice cooker, and if you wanted to make your own personalized one you could literally use a small tent and a rice cooker.

HOT/COLD THERAPY—LYMPH BLASTING SAUNA TECHNIQUE

What really takes your detoxing sauna experience to the next level is alternating between the hot steam and a cold shower, on repeat. I do this 2 or 3 times during a session and by the end of it I feel very different than if I were to just steam sauna alone. Alternating between hot and cold promotes blood and lymphatic flow, along with stimulating your nervous system. When you’re done doing this sequence you will feel like you just spent a hard hour in the gym and are ready for a nap. I like to sauna at night before bed because by the time I’m finished I am ready for it.

What to do:

  • Sit in steam sauna for 15-20 minutes
  • Quickly transfer to a cold shower and stand under it for as long as you can, usually a minute or two. This will become easier the more you do it.
  • Blast the water at your cerebellum as there are many nerve endings there. I also blast my armpits as there are major lymph nodes beneath.
  • Quickly transfer back to sauna.
  • Repeat 1-2 times if desired.

Dr. Morse says to always end on cold, so when you’re finished showering, endure one last blast of cold water.

*Note: This type of stimulation might be too much for some individuals and can leave you light headed and dizzy. Not a good or safe way to feel when standing in a wet hard tub. If this is too much for you, don’t do it until you have detoxed further or have eased into it. It’s best to ease into this if it’s too much stimulation for you. The cold will become easier to tolerate as you further detox.

If you don’t sauna, you can still do this in the shower by alternating between hot and cold water!

SETTING UP

Your sauna assembles quite easily with the use of plastic tubes and joints, you can’t really mess this up. Mine was a little tight zipping up so I cut a couple inches off of the largest support poles.

Do not use the chair that comes with the tent as you do not want your head sticking out of the head hole. Hang a tea towel over the head hole to block the steam from escaping and sit on a towel inside. There is a handy little remote that allows you to turn the unit on/off, adjust the heat setting, and set the timer. The sauna also comes with a myofascial foot roller that feels nice to roll your arches on, as well as a mat for under the tent for moisture control. Put an extra towel down anyway.

You want to start it on the highest setting (9 in my case) so that the water heats up the fastest. It will take about ten minutes for the water to come to a boil and fill your tent with steam, once it has you can put it on a lower setting to your heat comfort level, mine is either 6 or 7.

I’ve been using mine for a while now and eventually the top of the heater loosened up and I was losing a lot of steam out of it. I solved this issue by weighing it down with textbooks on top. This kept the steam from escaping and I finally put that stack of textbooks to use.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Skin Brushing

While I’m waiting for my sauna to heat up, I use the ten minutes to brush my skin. As I mentioned before, the skin is supposed to shed 2lbs a day, and with the restricting clothing materials we wear today, this just doesn’t happen. Skin brushing helps eliminate dead skin cells from the surface as well as stimulating your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system rests just beneath the skin and is easily stimulated by light brush strokes. While I was in deep detox modes, skin brushing would give me tingling sensations lighting up areas of my body. Other times it has instantly made me start sweating. Even if you don’t feel anything happening, it is still beneficial to your lymphatic system. Massage therapy will suggest you brush towards your heart, but with what we know about the kidneys being the main lymphatic outlet, we know better. Brush towards your main lymph nodes and continue to brush down to your kidneys.

You can find a skin brush at your local health store, but you want to make sure it is made with natural bristles as we don’t want to clog our pores with synthetic materials. There are different levels of coarseness you can get and you may want to have a separate softer bristle for your face (if you have severe acne like me, avoid face brushing as it will only irritate your acne further). I use a handy one that has a long detachable handle to reach the back area as well as a hand handle for easy to reach places.

Essential Oils

Having struggled with asthma all my life, I have found essential oils to be extremely beneficial for my lungs. If I’m having a tough time breathing, I use my steam sauna as a breathing aide as I add essential oils to the water and inhale the steam. For breathing enhancement, add a few drops of peppermint essential oil in the water before steaming. If. You can also use other essential oils you prefer, I like using lemon & orange as well.

Another thing you can do is brew herbal tea in your steamer so that you open your pores and lungs to healing herbs. I like to use Dr. Morse’s Heal All Tea or his 3-Lung Tea if my lungs are struggling.

Exfoliating Gloves

You’ll notice after being in the sauna for a little while that you can scratch yourself and there will be a white dead skin cells under your nail. I keep exfoliating gloves near my sauna to slough off this dead skin. Even though I skin brush before the sauna, there is still always a lot to slough off. Because of this, it is best to wash your exfoliating gloves often. Not only are you sloughing off dead skin, but you are also stimulating lymphatic circulation. These gloves are dirt cheap and great for the sauna.

Towels

One to sit on, one to clean with, and one for underneath the sauna. Use a small towel to cover the head hole as well. I have a towel robe that I use for transferring from the steam sauna to the shower and back.

Waterproof Speaker

Having a waterproof speaker is a necessity in my opinion! Doing the hot/cold sauna switch takes a good chunk of your free time, and sometimes, I absolutely dread doing it. You know that feeling—it’s winter, you’re warm and comfy in bed and you don’t wanna get up even to pee. Well getting out of your warm bed to jump into a freezing cold shower is definitely not appealing either. SO MAKE IT APPEALING! I have a plethora of playlists for my various moods. I seat dance like a mofo. I sing along. I listen to podcasts. I put my phone in a bag and watch YouTube videos. I listen to audio books. I do guided meditation. I watch Dr. Morse videos to remind me why I’m doing such crazy things, like jumping into a freezing shower after sweating my ass off. Do whatever it is that makes this fun for you, and getting a waterproof speaker did this for me. I can pause, change the song, adjust the volume, and even accept incoming calls (it has a mic so I can talk on the phone through the speaker). I use this cheap waterproof speaker off of Amazon for the sauna and everything else. It bumps!

Lymphatic Massage

If you have acne, your lymphatic system is especially congested in your head area. You can easily perform a lymphatic massage on yourself to help drain your head and neck. I follow the instructions in this video and in the first 8 months of my detox, I didn’t feel a thing because my lymph system was so stagnant. After significant detoxing with fruit & fasting, my lymph system had some flow to it and I could start to feel the facial lymph massages draining my head. Whether you feel it working or not, the lymph massage is helping loosen up the vessels and nodes. Regardless of using a sauna, I do this massage every night before bed with my favourite Living Libations cleansing/moisturizing oils.

CLEANING YOUR SAUNA

After every sauna use, I wipe down the inside walls and floor to remove moisture and avoid mold. I clean my sauna with my everyday natural cleaner, Dr. Bronner’s soap (diluted with water), about once a week.

MY EXACT ROUTINE

  • Fill up heater with water.
  • Add essential oils.
  • Turn heat setting to 9 and set timer to 60 min.
  • Close heater & add weights (books) to top to keep steam from escaping (maybe your steam sauna is better quality & the weight is unnecessary).
  • Close tent & cover head hole with towel.
  • Put on a bumpin’ playlist.
  • Go to bathroom & dry brush in front of the mirror for ten min while the water heats up.
  • Turn heat down to 6.
  • Open tent, lay towel down and climb in.
  • Zip up tent and ensure head hole is covered with a towel.
  • Sing & seat dance for as long as I can handle, about 15-20 min.
  • Get out of sauna, zip tent back up.
  • Jump in a cold shower for as long as I can handle, about 2min. Alternate on hot and cold once (always be sure to end it on cold!)
  • Quickly dry off on terry cloth robe & get back in sauna.
  • Sing & seat dance for another 15-20 min. Give lymph massage while doing so.
  • Get out of sauna, zip tent back up.
  • Gently use exfoliating gloves on my face in a 5x mirror.
  • Get in warm shower, rinse face.
  • Let warm water hit my cerebellum, then switch to cold for as long as I can handle.
  • Get back in sauna for another 15-20min. Use exfoliating glove on full body.
  • Jump in cold shower for 2 minutes. Change it to hot. Back to cold.
  • Get out & get dressed
  • Wipe down inside of sauna with towel

While the steam sauna is a steep little investment, it’s benefits are well worth it, especially if you have skin problems. If you don’t end up making the purchase, there are public steam rooms and sauna’s available for use (check out your local community centre or swimming pool). You can also access saunas & steam rooms in gyms if you have a membership. For your face, you can do it the old school way by holding your face over a bowl of boiled water with a towel to trap the steam in.

Whichever you choose, your skin will thank you!

Deep Detox: How I Stuck with Fruitarianism

Deep Detox: How I Stuck with Fruitarianism

The question I get asked most is, “How did I stick to an all fruit diet for so long?”

When I became chronically ill and couldn’t walk or stand, I lost a lot of control in my life. I had to depend on my family to do things for me most people don’t give a second thought about doing. Daily tasks like going to the bathroom, feeding and bathing myself were now hard to maintain. When you’re solely dependent on others, you cant help but feel like a burden and it leaves you feeling so out of control—like it’s not even fully your life anymore. When you have to double check with someone else to do anything, go anywhere, buy food, carry and reach things—your grip on your own life is fractured. I’ve always been very independent and self sufficient so it definitely bruised my ego to have others take care of me.

.

Chronic illness had taken over my life completely and there was no way I was going to let it win.

Feeling this kind of low is instrumental in a healing journey. I heard this line in a song and I’ve never felt such resonance with a lyric before, “you can’t rush your healing, darkness has it’s teachings”, (by Trevor Hall). It’s from this depth of darkness that you will pull the fire from your belly and dance around it. The drive pushing you to gain that control back and claim your life again. My disease robbed me of my freedom and often left me feeling helpless but I grasped at the things left that I could control—what I put in/on my body and the thoughts and attitudes in my head. This fueled my drive to heal myself as it was the only thing I could do to make any contribution to getting out of this situation.

Fortunately for me, my introduction to Dr. Robert Morse came two months before my health really hit the fan and I had already begun my transition to a wholefood vegan diet. From him I learned how the body worked and how fruit fasting was the fastest way to clean the body…my ticket out. When you think of it in terms of “what would you give to get your life back”, the answer for me was clear. ANYTHING. I’d trade months on a fruit diet for my legs back. I’d trade a year. I’d trade five. I’d give up anything and everything. I knew it was going to take time to heal but you really have to look at the big picture here; one to two years (ish) of hard work to have the rest of your life back. The logic is simple.

I just had to do the work.

There are a number of things I did to help me stick to an all fruit diet detox. The truth is, nothing I tell you is going to make you forget about potatoes. There are no words for that. However, there are mindset adjustments and strategies you can do to get over your cravings. The key to doing this type of serious self work is to stay on the positive side of perspective, and I’ll show you some of the things I did to maintain this.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Fruit fasting isn’t something you should jump into coming from the Standard American Diet. This is something you need to work yourself into, by first transitioning from SAD, to whole food plant based vegan, to raw vegan (and hang around here for a while) before you decide to jump into something like this. Without this transition, the shock to your body is going to be extremely unpleasant and you’re likely to have reactions while you create a shit storm of toxin recirculation. THE TRANSITION IS NO JOKE and should be taken very seriously, DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! Fruit fasting is NOT what I would suggest for someone looking to improve their diets, lose weight, or even heal moderate symptoms of disease, and truthfully doing so and adopting these methods below without proper education and motivation for it can help feed an eating disorder, and that’s not the message that I’m trying to send across.

Fruit fasting is extreme. It is for the chronically ill, for those like me who’s lives have been overrun by serious disease. Many milder symptoms of disease and illnesses , while certainly a major impairment to ones life, can be solved by adopting a raw vegan diet, high in fruits and veggies. It is a much more balanced approach and is often all that is needed for healing as it is very detoxifying in itself. But for the ones who are suffering from life threatening and altering diseases, fruit fasting is there for you to kick it up a notch. I highly suggest working with a Detox Specialist (hello there, I’m one of these people🙋🏻‍♀️) or doing your own research to see if this is good for you.

Living with chronic illness is extreme and sometimes we need to do extreme things to get out of it. While this isn’t the only way to heal, it is a way of healing that has worked for thousands of people, myself included. While I don’t recommend eating only fruit for the rest of your life, use it as a tool to get back to living a healthy, vibrant one.

Let’s go!

Sticking to All Fruit:

1. Educate Yourself

The most important thing I constantly did when detoxing was learning about it. I was always reading and watching things about detox and health and it would fuel my drive to continue with it. I made a deal with myself; if ever I was down and wanted to give up, I’d watch a Dr. Morse video, read health blogs, books, or anything to remind myself why I was doing this very hard thing. I found it very motivating to learn about detox because it was a constant reminder of why I had to do this. Not only was it motivating for me, it gave me the knowledge of how to do it. If I didn’t know the nature of the body and what a healing crisis might look like, I would have quit at the first sign of one and deemed this to “not work for me”. For the chronically ill, this kind of intense detox can often make things worse before they get better, that sure was the case for me. But it does get better, and knowing the why’s and how’s of detox allowed me to see these uncomfortable healing crisis’ as the blessings that they were. These signs, while unpleasant at the time, meant that this was working! To others, I looked like I was dying, but because I knew how regenerative detoxification worked, I knew this was just part of the process. This is the number one point I want to stress to you as it was my number one driver to stick with this!

2. Wellness Routine

Do other wellness practices too. I centered my life around healing and my daily activities always contributed to this goal, whether it was to help with physical symptoms or just keep myself happy and busy. Such things included mindfulness exercises (meditation, visualization, affirmations etc.), steam sauna, music, enemas, movement, stretching, etc. Healing is not only about food—it is mind body and soul in harmony with one another. Keeping yourself happy and positive is equally as important as eating fruit. Self care practices encourage you to love yourself and detoxing is the ultimate act of self love. I had a list of things and everyday I would choose a few of them to motivate me and make me feel like I was bettering myself. And I was. There’s now an app that can help you do this called Envol from @julieshealing that is awesome!

3. Parasite Cleanse

One physical thing that made a huge difference for me was the Parasite M tincture by Dr. Morse. I took a ton of his tinctures and this one was always being cycled through, I’d do two weeks on, two weeks off. There was a month where I was off of all herbs and the starch cravings were driving me insane. I started taking just the Parasite M and there was a noticeable difference in the intensity of the cravings. Get those critters out!

4. Always be Prepared

This is the most important part of healthy eating in general. If you don’t have ripe fruit ready to go then you’re most likely going to result to something else. With some fruits needing to spend some time on your counter to soften/ripen, you need to account for that time and plan accordingly with ready to eat fruit, like grapes or apples. Frozen fruit is always a good backup in case your melon is a dud! Always leave the house with more fruit than you think you’ll need!

5. Quality Fruit

I couldn’t do my own shopping, so I relied entirely on my dad for supplying me with fruit. Let’s just say this was a new territory for him so it was bumpy at first. If this is you, please take the time to explain to your caretaker how to properly pick ripe fruit. Unripe fruit is very unappetizing and won’t help you on your healing journey as it is actually acidic. It is best to go with the seasons. Buying quality fruit makes a huge difference in wanting to eat something and eating it because you have to. If you are not the one shopping, have a conversation about it and really explain how fruit ripens. I always have frozen fruit stocked up as a backup!

6. Be Mindful When You Eat

A lot of days I was very grateful for this way of life—for this great knowledge and the healing that would come from it. Other times I felt like I was in a detox prison and I had to sift through this punishment in order to get to the other side. You have a choice in your perspective and being mindful while eating helped me choose the right way to look at things. What I mean by mindful eating is:

-Focus on eating and not whatever else you were doing before it

-Take time to appreciate the good you are doing for your body

-Imagine your food going inside of you and wrapping you in a nourishing hug

-Visualize this fruit breaking up toxins and congestion within you

-See your organs celebrating this vibrant healing energy you are providing them

-Honour your food—this is your ticket to a vibrant life!

-Set healing intentions as you prep and eat your food

Instilling these habits every time you eat will become a helpful custom to keep your perspective on the positive side. Plus, we’ve all seen the experiments where two of the same plants are grown; one with words of love and the other with words of hate. The one with words of love always grows beautifully while the one with words of hate tend to die. Intention is more powerful than you think!

7. Consciously Shift Your Attention

At times, this kind of discipline had me writhing and seething. I just wanted to indulge, feel normal, feel warm, to crunch on something damnit!!! If you keep focusing on the lack, that’s all you will feel. Pick something up, do something else, you need to shift your attention elsewhere. If you instil this habit every time a craving comes on, you can move on from it.

8. Create a New Instagram Account

I created a new Instagram account for the sole purpose of looking at appetizing fruit, other fruitarians, spiritual posts, and motivating quotes. I didn’t follow anyone I knew or anything that didn’t pertain to uplifting me. I wouldn’t even follow people who posted salads and stayed away from any raw or vegan food pages because it made me want it! Keep this account strictly for a pick me up when you need it. I can’t tell you the amount of times I wanted to quit fruit fasting and eat something else for a change when I’d pop onto the gram and read about someone’s healing experience, good mood, or motivating quote and feel my own perception shift for the better. 9. Have an End in Sight

Not an end to your detox, that can take a long time and it’s best not to focus on that end, but a temporary end. A reward for your hard work. I started doing this after about 4+ months on all fruit when I felt I needed some new motivation. Once a month I would have a “cheat day” (that sometimes turned into two) where I would indulge in raw and cooked food. When I got that craving for potatoes, I’d pull out my phone and tell myself that in 14 days, 21 hours, and 37 minutes, there’d be a Caribbean sweet potato in the oven waiting for me. It started off cheating with unhealthy food (Indian takeout is my fav) but I quickly learned this was an extreme shock to the system and resulted in horrible digestion, pain, and unpleasant elimination from both ends. This is truly a horrible thing to do to your body and I strongly advise you not to find that out for yourself. Learn from my early mistakes and indulge in some guacamole, beautiful raw salads, and some steamed/roasted veggies and maybe a mucuslean meal. Throughout the month I’d even have fun planning what I’d have on my cheat day. Sometimes you need to get it out of your system in order to find balance and move on. I really don’t think this hindered my healing any and I think having a reward day was instrumental to my mental health.

*there’s a right and a wrong way to break a fast..break with raw veg before anything cooked or heavy! Avoid anything processed or high in protein as this will be hard to digest, nuts & seeds included.

10. Countdown App

I used a countdown app on my phone to show me how many days I’ve accomplished and how many more until I reach my goal (in which there is a reward, and yes it is food!). There have been countless times where I’d be close to giving into my cravings when I’d pull out my phone and see that I’ve made it 18 days on fruit, and then be like “damn girl you’re killing it don’t mess it up now” Honestly, having to reset this app made me feel shame and failure, and knowing I’d feel that shame when I’d reset my countdown and ruin 18 days of killing it would keep me in check. It’s the physical act of resetting it that did it for me. Having this day to look forward to, and knowing how many weeks, days, and minutes until it happens (thanks to the countdown app) really helped me stick to my goals.

11. Tea Time

Teas are a great way curb cravings because making it occupies you and drinking it takes a while so you can forget about your craving. It makes me feel a little more satisfied, I do this at night when I’d normally get peckish.

12. Reflecting

I would have several journals to write and reflect in, but one in particular was exclusively for when I was on a high. Basically a book that I wrote in whenever I was feeling like the bad ass detox warrior I am, stoked on life and the healing that I knew was coming. I would fill it with gratitude, hopes and plans for the future, detox accomplishments, and reasons to keep going. When I got sucked into the darkness of depression I would reread this and it’d help me shift my perspective.

I also made a vision board (I had a lot of time on my hands ok?) I went snipping through magazines and created a fold out vision board covered in raw food, people running, nature, travel, etc. I pasted affirmations and encouraging bits all over it and while I kept it hidden, I looked at it every day to remind myself of what I was working towards.

Seeing my hopes, dreams, and encouraging words of wisdom would wrap me in gratitude for the life I knew I was building.

13. It’s ok to say no

For my own healing, I was isolated and I liked it that way. Family gatherings would stress me out beyond words because of the judgment I would face and having to try to explain something that most people don’t and probably won’t ever want to understand. I looked like I was dying and I can’t blame them for seeing that and being worried so it was easier for me to skip these events. Now for me this wasn’t hard because I was 26, single, and bedridden, but I understand this is a major stressor for many detoxers as they have more responsibilities. When embarking on this kind of journey, you start to really see the corruptions in the food and health industry, and you wonder how others don’t see this too. And you might feel like they need to know, you might wanna shout it on the rooftops, I know I did. Take it from me, don’t explain it unless asked. Avoid situations that you feel will stress you out or send you back into old behavioural patterns, like social friend gatherings. Ask your friends and family to please hold faith that you know what you’re doing, and while they might not understand it, to have respect that you know what’s best for you. Ask your loved ones for space to heal and for their support, whether or not they agree with you. It’s ok to remove yourself from these situations as they can be triggering, and low stress is imperative on this journey!

So that’s it. I’m sorry there is no easy answer other than it basically comes down to your mindset, will power, and ability to maintain a positive perspective. After the first few days of all fruit it starts to become habit, I call it the three day hump because it gets easier after that. Take pride in knowing that by doing this you are doing all that you can to heal. That you are putting in the work and even if you can’t see it right now, it is working inside of you. Remember, it took years to build up to this level of toxicity it’s going to take some time to get it out. There is no good or bad, only perspective and lessons. While you might feel like you’re in hell right now, one day you will look back on this as being the greatest thing that ever happened to you, because you now shine brighter than you ever have before.
